The Cross Country (STEM) School of Excellence proudly represented Kiunga and the Western Province at the International STEM Conference 2025, held from Friday, 31st October to Sunday, 2nd November at the Hilton Hotel, Port Moresby.
The prestigious event brought together students, teachers, academics, and industry leaders from across Papua New Guinea to celebrate innovation, creativity, and the transformative power of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Cross Country STEM students showcased their innovative project addressing flood resilience and sustainability for vulnerable communities in Western Province. Their presentation, featured during the STEM Student Exhibition Booths, demonstrated ingenuity and practical thinking in tackling real-world challenges through STEM-based solutions.
The conference also featured two key workshops — Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Student Showcase — where students engaged in hands-on sessions, mentoring activities, and collaborative discussions. Participants had the opportunity to interact with academics, industry experts, government delegates, and fellow students, fostering knowledge exchange and cross-sector collaboration.
All participating students attended an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Workshop, culminating in the presentation of certificates of recognition for their creativity and contribution to STEM innovation.
Funded by Australia Awards Papua New Guinea (AAPNG) and delivered by STEM Punks Australia, the conference was designed to empower students and teachers to think critically, innovate, and engage meaningfully in science and technology education. STEM Punks also facilitated the presence of experienced STEM educators in PNG, ensuring a rich and interactive learning experience for participants.
Speaking after the event, representatives from Cross Country School expressed their gratitude to the organizers and partners for providing such a valuable platform for young innovators.
“This conference has truly inspired our students to see themselves as problem solvers and innovators. It’s a milestone moment for STEM learning in our school and province.”
The school extended sincere appreciation to Australia Awards PNG, STEM Punks Australia, and the Australian High Commission for championing STEM education in Papua New Guinea and recognizing the pioneering efforts of schools like Cross Country in shaping the future of innovation.
